Historic Fourth Ward Park (H4WP) will ultimately become a 30-acre Atlanta greenspace stretching roughly from North Avenue to Freedom Parkway. It is one of the first new Atlanta BeltLine parks. Its first phase of construction, consisting of a stormwater detention pond that will become the central amenity of the larger park, broke ground on October 15, 2008.

Historic Fourth Ward Park brings 17 new acres of greenspace to a neighborhood that has lacked this kind of grand recreational space. Through a partnership with the Department of Watershed Management, ABI built a new 2-acre storm water detention lake that serves as the centerpiece of the new park. It helps solve some of the historic flooding issues in the area in and around City Hall East and helps the City meet the terms of the federal sewer system consent decree. It also cost nearly $15 million less than the original estimate, which consisted of a stormwater relief tunnel, and will have photovoltaic solar panels to reduce energy consumption from the grid.

The other key players in bringing this new park to reality are the Trust for Public Land, which made the initial land acquisitions for the project, The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, which through its fundraising helped purchase much of the land, and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, through Park Improvement Bonds. City Councilman Kwanza Hall has played a key role working with the community and the City to help facilitate construction and organize clean-ups in the vicinity. In addition, the community around this park has already formed the Historic Fourth Ward Park Conservancy (www.h4wpc.org) to help fund maintenance. The end result will be an energy efficient park with new spaces for active and passive recreation, including public art, ballfields, and the City’s first skate park.
