Parks and Greenspace

The BeltLine will increase Atlanta’s greenspace by nearly 40 percent as the project adds nearly 1,300 acres of new parks and greenspace over 25 years. The Atlanta BeltLine will create a linear park with 33 miles of multi-use trails connecting 40 parks, including approximately 700 acres of existing parks. The BeltLine Redevelopment Plan calls for $480 - $570 Million to be spend on land acquisition and $275 - $340 Million on park and trail construction

The Atlanta BeltLine Five-Year Work Plan has a strong focus on the creation of parks and trails to deliver early tangible benefits for residents. The Work Plan includes acquiring 585 – 625 acres of greenspace and developing 260 – 300 acres, including:

  • 480-490 acres of parks acquired with 155-165 acres developed
  • 5-7 miles / 90-100 acres of trails and
  • 5-9 miles / 15-35 acres of spurs acquired and developed

This investment in the Five-Year work plan of $180 Million will come from a combination of sources including the BeltLine TAD, the Capital Campaign, Park Opportunity Bonds, Department of Watershed Management funding, and Federal Funding for trails.

Historic 4th Ward Park Phase I

Atlanta BeltLine, Inc (ABI) has been authorized by the Department of Watershed Management to design and oversee construction of the Clear Creek Combined Sewer Basic Relief Project that will include a pond and various park amenities on five (5) acres in the North Avenue area, This is the first phase of Historic Fourth Ward Park, which will be approximately 30 acres upon ultimate completion.

The project site is just south of North Ave and City Hall East and is located along the planned BeltLine corridor.  As a result of the new park,  the  North  Avenue  Area  and  the  Old  Fourth  Ward community will increase its green space by creating a safe and secure environment, aesthetically maximize the feeling of being near water and enhance the area amenities with a proposed amphitheater and picnic shelters, while  protecting the area’s mature trees. Completion of Phase I is expected by the end of 2010.

Historic 4th Ward Park Phase II

The second phase of the Historic 4th Ward Park after Clear Creek envisions the extension of the park from North Avenue to the northern edge of Ralph McGill Boulevard on the south. The park will include an event lawn extending from North Ave to the edge of Clear Creek, a large play space for children, a splash pad, a small brook fed with excess water from Clear Creek, and accessible paths.  The 4 acre property adjacent to the Cox Communication TV tower next to Freedom Parkway will be developed as an active recreation space inclusive of a 15,000 square foot skatepark, multi-use turf field, a playground, and a connection to the interim and final Beltline multi-use path to be completed respectively in early 2010 and 2011. In total, almost 17 acres will be developed between the two phases. The reduction in stormwater runoff via the development of the second phase will be over 50%- well in excess of the 30% required of any new development. Wood + Partners Inc. has been selected as the park designer, and Reeves Construction is the contractor. Construction began in spring ’10. Substantial completion is expected in spring 2011
